Oxfam Trailwalker 2004

Team 480

It was early March 2004 when Heinz, Gerard and myself set of to run the Sham Tseng Mountain Marathon. On the way in Gerard's car we talked about doing the Trailwalker 2004, and that's how it started.

Heinz has done the Trailwalker two times, Gerard and myself could only imagine what it meant to run for 100km.

Well, we made up our mind and we only needed to start training, prepare for support team and most importantly think about raising money for Oxfam charity. After few month and a some training runs we felt pretty ok and formed the team Rose Noir Runner. It meant a lot of sacrifices in private live considering that I also had to open a hotel end of July.

On July 28 then, 4 days before our hotel opening, I got the bad news from my doctor that I need a surgery to remove my appendices and I would not be able to do any physical exercise for 2 month which threatened me being unable to join the team. 4 weeks later I was on the trail again for a 4 hours run. I felt no pain and that gave me the confidence to start training again and bring myself back up to the former fitness conditions. With 2 month left for training, most people in doubt that I will make it, it was clear that only a strong willpower would help.

Meanwhile we have found our fourth team member Au Yeung, a very fit young gentlemen who did run the trail the year before.

November 5, early morning we went then to the start for what became then the biggest physical challenge ever. Set with a goal of completing below 20 hours and a very detailed time schedule, we started at 11 am and a estimated finishing time before 7 am the following day.

On the track we were supported by our friends from the Hong Kong Chefs Association, Perry, Eddy Leung, Philippe Seiler and Arno, Winne Lau, A Ching, Yvonne and my lovely Ruby. Also Roger who waited for us with cold champagne at the finishing line

After a long day and a long night, we stopped 4 times for a 15 minute break, we finished at 6:45am on Saturday November 6, exactly 19hours and 45minutes after our start. Out of 657 teams we finished 39th, which put us inside the best 5% of the teams.
